(My mom and I, 1984)

This is my Sendak collection. The most glaring omission, I think, is ‘Higglety Pigglety Pop!’ and I would love to have a copy of ‘Hector Protector and as I Went Over the Water.’ I grew up reading his books, and as a gay, jewish, picture book author/illustrator, It was always reassuring to know that I was similar to him in a few ways. Rest in peace, Maurice Sendak.
Paper Publishers Part 2: Random House
Now it’s time to leave SoHo and Somerville, the homes of Scholastic and Candlewick, respectively, and enter midtown Manhattan. Most of the big six publishers are located here, and they all reside in some kind of high-rise or skyscraper. Random House’s ‘Random House Tower’ is the tallest of New York City’s publishing houses (684 ft), and also the newest (completed in 2003), which befits their status as the world’s largest publisher of trade books. It’s a mixed use building with office spaces designed by Skidmore Owings & Merrill, and luxury apartments, on the upper floors, designed by Ismael Leyva Architects. Print: Random House

Today marks the release of C.R. Mudgeon (Atheneum), written by Leslie Muir! The book is available at fine independent bookstores everywhere, and to celebrate, here’s an awesome review on Jama’s Alphabet Soup blog.
Here’s a new Kidlitart guest post, in which I was asked to give some advice on the picture book storyboard process. This is an image from The Little Matador, where I abstracted the main characters in order to asses the flow of the book.
